How do you treat pedal edema?
Compression stockings
- Movement. Moving and using the muscles in the part of your body affected by edema, especially your legs, may help pump the excess fluid back toward your heart.
- Elevation.
- Massage.
- Compression.
- Protection.
- Reduce salt intake.
How do you evaluate pedal edema?
To determine the extent of the pitting edema, your doctor will push on your skin, measure the depth of the indention, and record how long it takes for your skin to rebound back to its original position. They will then grade it on a scale from 1-4.
What is pedal oedema?
Pedal edema is the accumulation of fluid in the feet and lower legs. It is typically caused by one of two mechanisms. The first is venous edema, caused by increased capillary filtration and retention of protein-poor fluid from the venous system into the interstitial space.
What are the causes of bilateral pedal edema?
The most probable cause of bilateral edema in older patients is chronic venous insufficiency. Heart failure is also a common cause. Other systemic causes such as renal disease or liver disease are much rarer.
What medications cause pedal edema?
Many medicines can cause edema, including:
- NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen and naproxen)
- Calcium channel blockers.
- Corticosteroids (like prednisone and methylprednisolone)
- Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone.
- Pramipexole.
What does 1+ pitting edema mean?
It is assessed by applying pressure on the affected area and then measuring the depth of the pit (depression) and how long it lasts (rebound time). Grade +1: up to 2mm of depression, rebounding immediately. Grade +2: 3–4mm of depression, rebounding in 15 seconds or less.
What side of heart failure causes pedal edema?
Symptoms depend on which area of the body is most involved in the reduced pumping action. When the left side of the heart (left ventricle) starts to fail, fluid collects in the lungs (edema).
